January 29, 2011 - Making the cross to Northern Leyte

By: Arturo Valdez

6:44 AM - We're at the tip of Esperanza, Masbate about to cross the channel dividing the island to Leyte. We departed Cauayan at 3:30am making the most of calmer sea. At a distance we can see the shadow of the mountains of Leyte. Swells building up but hope that the crossing not as rough as the past days.

10:19 AM - The NE wind had settled a bit during our crossing that by 9:30am we safely made it across. There was even a brief windless moment. But now, it awakened and causing white caps and big swells all over. Luckily we're already sheltered by Leyte landmass sailing and hugging the coastline. If we're late in our timing at the channel, it will be another stressful experience all over again.

5:05 PM - Truly, we've been guided by the Almighty. Yesterday, because SAMA TAWi-TAWI needed much repairs, we turned back 1km after departure. We waited for today and got the perfect timing of calmer seas, thus safely crossed the channel. We dropped anchor at Ormoc port by 5:00pm.
NE wind is still blowing strong and most likely kicking big swells in the open channel between Masbate and Leyte pushed by stronger currents from San Bernardino Strait. We got through during some kind of rest by Amihan.
