January 30, 2011 - Monitoring weather developments

By: Arturo Valdez

LPA developing into typhoon originating from SE of NE Mindanao will enter RP AOR Feb 1 and will cross Visayas. Will decide on route once we're in Maasin, Leyte. Repeat scenario when we reach Surigao last Oct 2009 got hit by last typhoon 'Urduja' now welcomed by first of 2011 'Amang'. Typhoon late and early of the year are normally powerful ones. Need to look for secured shelter when it comes.

7:00 AM - After our prayers, we left Ormoc Port for Maasin, Southern Leyte 60NM away. Everyone enjoyed Ormoc and PCG Station Cmdr. Tony Cuasito treated his old Navy buddies Rey Godoy, Edwin Valdez, Ojie Ojano @ PCG HQ.
We are closely monitoring latest weather report of an LPA developing into a typhoon off SEE of Northern Mindanao and Surigao is along our route. Will decide for our final route to Butuan once in Maasin and received latest weather bulletin.

6:00 PM - We safely reached Maasin @ 3PM. PCG Maasin arranged our docking @ port. Skies this early evening are cloudy but the sea is calmer, winds most likely sucked by incoming typhoon "Amang". We'll leave early tomorrow around 2AM so that by 6AM, we are already crossing Surigao Strait. We have a small window to get out of the incoming storm and need to move out fast most likely towards Nasipit Port.
